I read about using a hack saw blade to hold up the fuel pump rod to install the new pump on my BB. Took the liitle plug out below the pump mount and the rod slid right out. Stupid me, I didn't look at which end was the pump end and now I need to put it back together. One end is slightly rounded, the other is perfectly flat. Anybody know which end is which?

Re: Fuel pump rod--which end is up? (JB)
Sorry Pal...I don't remember...I had to replace my fuel pump several months ago, but I just can't recall...I want to say that the flat side goes into the block.
I believe the rounded end goes against the cam since it performs just like a lifter. A flat end would scrape the cam and take out that loob. Try some heavy duty grease around the top of the rod, it will hold the rod up in there. Of course this doesn't always work, but what does. I used a wire bent into an 'L' last time.
Hey guy's .... Take out the bolt in the front of the block in line with the push rod. Temporarily use a longer bolt to hold the push rod up. Piece of cake.... Just remember to put the short bolt back when you're done. Small blocks only! :D

Most of the fuel pump rods I have seen are flat on both ends. I would think if this is your case it should not matter.
Nope, it's definitely got rounded edges on one end and is very slightly dimpled right in the center. The other end's completely flat with sharp edges. I'm pretty sure it's the original rod.
Follow-up: a gearhead buddy of mine says definitely flat side toward cam, side with rounded edges toward pump, so that's how I think I'm going to install it. Any big block guys want to chime in?
