Default Ordering parts for a non-stock engine?

Im fairly new to working on cars, however, I'm mechanically inclined and work in a hands on field. I'm trying to do more basic work to my 1974 coupe but Im unsure of one thing. I have non-stock Gm engine in my vette (when I bought it) stamped 3970010. When I order items for the car (plugs, power steering pump, fuel pump) do i just say 74 vette or do i have to give the engine number every time?

I got all the different codes and stamps off the block.

you don't need the engine codes. As long as it has the short water pump (standard vette stuff) all you need to tell them is year and its a 350 and all that.
Unless, someone changed a lot of other stuff with the engine, belt setup and the like.

Thanks. Ill just assume it's all standard stuff until something doesnt match up, then Ill go from there. Most everything works fine. The power steering pump has a small leak and doesn't seem very good to me, then again ive never driven a car this old before. Also the Tach doesn't work. I pulled the distributor and it doesn't have the tach drive assembly on it so im assuming either they didnt bother modernizing the tach or went electric and it doesnt work. Not sure where to start on that without pulling the dash :-(. Seems to large of a job for me at the moment.

Most auto parts stores these days, some are worse than others, can't (or refuse to go through the effort) to help you unless you can give them the year make and model of the car you are working on. They will not know the engine code.

I am in a very similar situation as you. My car is a 74 with the same block casting. In that respect it is a good old small block chevy. So for example, not all small block cars used a return line on the fuel pump, 74 did so you can tell them you have a 74 vette if you need a fuel pump.

On corvettes, the power steering pump, brackets and pulley changed in 75. So it will depend on what was installed as to what year car you tell them you have if you need a ps pump.

For, me. If i need a starter, i say i have a 2000 Cadillac Escalade
power steering pump, i have a 75 corvette
transmission parts, i have an 87 monte carlo ss
rear end parts, 78 corvette
valve cover gasket, i have an 88 chevy truck

I did this to myself...

you should be fine with pretty, much everything. Spark plugs could be different depending on the compression ratio of the engine

Just for fun, could you post a clear close up pic of your pad? I'm curious to see what vehicle it came from.

I already ordered a power steering pump from autozone for a 1974 vette. Should I call up and cancel it asap and ask for a 75 vette pump?

As for the pics ill do it as soon as I can, off to work now.
