Thinking about getting an early 70's convertible and turning it into a street/strip car. Big motor, maybe s/c. Is this a bad idea for any particular reason? Is there a 500'ish hp engine swap for that era corvette and is there a commonly used s/c package for same? WOndering why more people don't do this. Purists please don't flame, if I do this at all I will have no regard for matching #'s or keeping the car authentic. It will be a firebreathing beast and any stock parts that get in the way will go.
Sounds like a good idea to me! I just picked up a 69 vert BB with Richmond 5 speed and a 502ci / 502hp crate engine and love it so far! I don't see any reason that I can't even almost use this car as a daily driver as smooth as the engine is in it. Good luck in finding a good deal on a vert or on one that is close to what you want. I thought there was somebody selling a early 70's vert that had a s/c that ran crazy 1/8 times and his wife drove it to work on occasion. I have to do a search for his userid for you.
His userid is "redturbo", but I haven't seen him post in quite a while. His signature "383 turbocharged, T76 turbo spearco intercooler AFR Heads, best 1/8 mile 6.05 @ 118" http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zero...ofile&id=28020
My 502 was already installed in the car when I purchased it. I just picked up my vert a week ago yesterday. I haven't had time to do anything yet except put in gas. I believe that you can pick up the 502/502's at any chevy high performance place or online at like http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com or http://www.paceparts.com for around 7K. Sallee also has a 630hp 502 that also runs on pump gas for around 12K.

Lots of guys here have done exactly what you're planning, but most do it with a coupe if it will see serious strip time. Any hp level you want is a simple bolt in affair in a C3 if your wallet can take the stress.
You'll learn that "fire breathing beast" and 500 hp don't really go together in a C2 or C3  Lots of 500 hp/500 cubic inch cars around here (and 600 and 700!) on nothing but engine. Once you get into power adders (turbo, s/c) the number is more like 1000+.

I attest to that Joe. Fire breathing doesn't come cheap, but it sure beats fishing!

I was figuring a 500hp motor with s/c would be good for 750 rwhp, that qualifies as fire breathing to most people. No? Not planning on trying to win any prizes at the strip, would just like a car that's fun to kick around in and take to the track every once in a while. For some reason the idea of a convertible is just stuck in my head.
Cost is all relative. I was hoping it would be something like $5k motor + $5k s/c, sounds like it will be a little more than that. Which, including the cost of the car, is still nickels and dimes compared to the C5 Lingfelter route. What do you have to spend on tranny and rear end? (It will be an auto)
Just teasing about the "fire breathing" stuff :) 500+ hp, anyway you get it, is pretty fiery stuff! More than most C3s can handle. 750 is downright insane
When you get into these power ranges, just like any other car the cost goes beyond just the engine. I'm building a 540 right now that should put out 600+ hp, and the trans and rear to match it will cost as much as the engine. Check out http://www.tomsdifferentials.com for some ballpark prices. I have a 3.08 there right now that will probably be around $4k when it's done :(
