Default 68 427 heads/cam

I *might* be on the verge of buying a supposedly stock 68 vert 427 (390?)

If I do, I'm thinking about upgrading it's performance, at least so it will keep up with an LS3 or better.

I'd like to keep compression about 10:1.

I see edelbrock has a head/cam package, but since it's a once size fits all bbc, I'm thinking the compression will take a hit with the smaller 427. I think they have a head with 100cc, but not sure where that would put me. I'm not sure if those engines came with dome pistons, or flat tops.

BTW, the car has an "L88" style hood.

I'm not looking to take over the race track, those days are over. But, would like a streetable, but fast combo.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

If you end up going through the whole engine you can match up pistons to whatever size chamber you want. In other words, you can use the heads of your choice whether they have closed chambers like the Edelbrocks or open chambers like what most other companies make. I run the Edelbrocks you listed because the bottom end of my engine was fresh and it was built for the factory closed chamber oval port heads. That way I didn't drop compression and still had a very good flowing aluminum head. A few weeks ago it ran 11.37 @ 119.7 MPH, so they work pretty well. However, if you build from scratch, the Brodix Race Rites with larger chambers have a stock exhaust port location and flow very well. Those would be my choice, since you know headers would fit. If you don't mind rolling the dice on header fit, the AFRs would be a great choice.

Thanks Les.

If I understand you correctly, the 100cc heads give stock compression, which I believe is 10.5.

Still getting details of the car, turns out it has a 502 crate in it.

I wasn't entirely clear but you pretty much figured out what I was saying anyway. If the car had a stock 390 HP 427 it would have the small chamber heads like the Edelbrocks- although factory heads have smaller valves. As it turns out, it's irrelevant since the car has a 502. Could be a lot of fun!
