I have a '70 which has expired tabs. In MN, you can get "collector plates" for cars that are over 20 years old. The "rule" is supposed to be that if you have collector plates, you only drive the car to car shows or to/in parades. I really won't be doing either...but only drive the car about once or twice a month for about 4 months a year (Mpls weather!).
Has anyone had any experience with this? Will I actually get pulled over or a fine if I get "caught" driving the car and not going to a parade or show?
The advantage is you don't have to re-new the license tabs every year...it's a one-time fee (that happens to be cheaper than the yearly re-newal of standard plates).
Any thoughts? I'm sure there are plenty of other violators that have collector plates and drive it to....say....the movie theator! (Those criminals!)
I did it on mine. Car has been pulled over once and the cop didn't say anything, I even asked him about it. I have been driving on this plate for almost two months without a problem.
I think that if you tried to do the same thing on a 1975 Chevy G Van that was used for Tom's Painting Service that you would get trouble.
I am sure you wouldn't get pulled over for that. There is another cool Minnesota plate program. If you can find an old matched set of 70 plates, the DMV will let you use them as your legal plates. Kinda neat to have the same year plates as the car.
