if you have the original system and catalyst, about 40 horsepower. you will have to adjust the timing and the carburetor , excellent modification.
If you are making the swap from stock exhaust, its probably the single biggest improvement you are ever going to make. If you are going to get the maximum benefit from it, though, you are going to need to improve the intake side as well, or at least rejet the carb. Headers will make the engine run leaner. Setting up your timing curve properly is always a good idea.

I ended up doing the obx headers/ side exhaust with no inserts, looks great and makes the car stand out but no bottom end torque and neighbors are not too happy. I ended up ordering the 2.5 inch sweet thunders inserts to make it not as loud and hopefully some bottom end torque as well. that should be here sometime next week then im getting a full tune up done, whats the best spark plug/wires to use plus ignition box
Can't comment on a side exhaust but considering that a stock 78 L-82 probably made about 180-185 RWHP (Net HP 220), my L-82 with 2.5 duals with Shorty headers did 233 RWHP on the dyno- the comment above about 40 HP is very real!
I just finished putting some of the OBX headers/side pipes on mine. Look nice and fitment was as commented on here on the forum. I had to offset some of the holes and dent around the steering box and idler arm for a little extra clearance (in my mind atleast). They did bolt right up the first time, just very close. I'm happy with them and the money I saved.
