'80 Fuel Pump
I'm seem to be getting fuel leaking out of the fuel pump body.
1. How do I change it? Unhook everything, replace with new one, reconnect fuel lines? Anything to be aware of?
2. The pump on the car only has two connections. Fuel in, fuel out. I know it should have had a third connection for fuel return. Previous owner did away with that system. The return line from the tank stops in front of the rear tire. I'd like to buy the pump with the return on it, but is the return side pressurized? Do i need to the same flared fittings to replace the missing section of the return line?
1. You have to make sure the pump pushrod is fully up before installing the new pump.
2. The return is pressurized but uses hose clamps. Look at the correct fuel pump.
Use a small screw drive or bent piece of metal to hold pushrod up as you slip the fuel pump arm in the block.
The fuel pump should pull into the block with a little spring resistance depending on where the engine stopped but if its getting tight before its flush against the block, the arm is on top of the pushrod and you'll have to start over.
I used grease to temporarily hold the pump pushrod up in place. Replace your rubber fuel lines while you're at it (mine were cracked from age and slowly weeped- no wonder the garage reeked of gasoline). Use the pre-bent (S-shape) ones to avoid kinks and cracks. Be aware that some fuel will be lost. Clamping the existing rubber hoses, removing/replacing the pump, connecting new hoses to pump, and then being quick while removing old and attaching new to steel fuel lines will keep this to an acceptable minimum.
This was the first repair I tackled on my Vette. If I can do it, you know it's not that challenging...
