Default Seat Belts

I just purchased a 72 C3 and am stymied by the simplest of things. The previous owner pulled the shoulder belts out of the seat backs (presumably they interfered with loading). They are original with retractors (everything works) and have a plastic sheath near the buckle end. I have tried and cannot get the belt through the slot in the seat to make them usable. The meatal tab will go through, but I haven't been able to feed the plactic sheath through the slot. I could cut off the sheath and it would work, but I would really like to keep it in orginal condition. I thought about taking the belt off the retractor and feeding it through that way, but it seemed like that would get me into even more mischief. I appreciate the help as I would really like to afford my passengers the added protection of the shoulder belts.

You can remove the plastic sheath by dipping it in a pot of boiling water. It will become very pliable and then will come off.
