Default New Engine ordered

I came to the conclusion that it was time to do something about the tired old 350 with 118k and the occasional smoke cloud that would follow me. After considering pulling it for a rebuild, I determined time and $ would be better spent on a nice crate engine.
Well, I now have a 383 stage 2 ordered.
Let the fun begin!

NICE!!

Make sure not to use synthetic oil until engine rings are fully seated. For my 406, I didn't go by the mileage for the engine break in period. I went by the engine oil consumption level as I was advised by the engine builder. Just check often to see if oil level dropped and does not decrease anymore.

Youll love that 383. Increase in cubes makes it sound like it wouldnt be that big a difference but that extra stroke youll feel esp at WOT

Did you need to do any mod's to fit under the stock hood. I am also looking to update the stock 350 in my 1978. I have been looking at the ZZ4 GM Crate turn key package.

Not quite done yet and haven't put the hood back on, but, so far everything is matched up perfectly.

Looks like a great engine, you will have a lot fun with it.

I have been considering going this route as well but maybe add a Fast EFI or other system + a T56. Looking fwd to reading your reviews.

I always laugh at this. Every single engine we install immediatly from the get go, gets synthetic oil. These are brand new Vortec rotating assy's, most are ZZ4's. No issues, ever, not one for years. Many of our Marinized manufactures recommend this, Heck, Nearly all are now also using Synthetic oils from the start. Merc, Volvo, PCM, Indmar, Ilmore. ect. I know this can lead to a debate over oil and such, but here we go. Oh, and yes, we run at WOT nearly immediatly. Under 1hr of run time, and then up to 5,250 rpm while under load. Varying, from 3k to 5 k. We tell our customers, run it like you would any other time. These motors are nearly bullet proof.

There's the link to my "new engine" album.

You may notice if you look carefully that we used one of those nice engine lift brackets that bolt to the manifold in place of the carb. Worked great, however, you will notice in the last couple pics it looks flat. The piece the chain hooks through snapped off! Luckily we were already resting on the motor mounts and simply working to re-position at the time. Only 5 minutes earlier and the engine was 4ft in the air while we lifted it up over the fender....that, would have been catastrophic!!!

You had to raise the hood with a 383? Is this common for all 383 crates?

Only depending on the induction system on top. Tall manifold and carb/air cleaner combo means limited to no clearance. It is the same size otherwise as any small block.

Holy CRAP!!!!

Took it out last night for the 1st drive. Gave it a quick wash and went to a cruise night with it....and left the hood off. The thing was incredible!!!

I was concerned when I put the air cleaner on that it sat too high even though in my mind I knew the engine and manifold heights were supposed to be the same, it just "looked" high. After we got back from the car cruise we put it on and it fits. Would have sucked since a good friend painted the underside for me with a punisher skull.
