I have a 76 vette and its was working fine but about two weeks ago the reverse was missing and i couldnt get it into reverse. Now it dowsnt want to go into drive either? I think it might be the linkage arm? any other things it might be? I Checked the trans fluid levels and they were a little low so i added fluid and that didnt help... Any IDEAs
Im certainly not a transmission medic, but we could use some more information...
Does the car move forward? Have you visually inspected the cable at the shifter, the pan bracket, and at the transmission arm? Is that cable still in one piece? Is the cable solidly fastened to the bracket on the pan? Does the arm move when you move the shifter? If the answer to all of these things is yes, your problem is inside the trans. If the answer to anything after "does the car move forward" is no, chances are your shifter cable is broken or loosely fastened to the bracket, and is no big deal.
If you have not inspected these items, well you should asap. If not, what are you feeling? Are you putting the car into gear and feeling the same degree of resistance that you always get when you move the shifter? Give us a blow by blow of everything that happens and what you are feeling/hearing etc, and what the car does
Well it is an auto and it is the tension on the cable bc when I removed the console and had a larger range of motion I had all gears. How do I adjust the tension? I preformed a full flush and then refastened the tension on. I left the console off and am able to get all the gears. I just need to retension the cable how do i do that? Thanks for the help.

I am only familiar with aftermarket set ups [I can only guess that the stock set up is the same or similar]. The cable passes through a bracket that is attached to the pan. Where the cable passes through the bracket, there is a section of cable sheathing that is threaded, and there will be a nut on the cable before the bracket, and a nut after the bracket, and tighten it down in accordance to where you want the cable situated.
I cant imagine that the factory set up would be wildly different.
