Smog Pump woes

McJacks with AIR tubes. All smog connected correctly.
Car started backfiring after letting of the throttle. I suspected an exhaust leak, but found no evidence. On a whim, I disconnected the AIR injection pump hoses. Voila! Popping is gone.
Investigating the Smog pump, it appears to work fine (pumps air obviously) but the vacuum fitting on the diverter valve seems to leak. When I suck on it I just pull air.
So, I am convinced the diverter valve needs to be rebuilt. Any recommendations on rebuilding or replacing? (Yes, I want to keep the SMOG system intact.)
Next, with the Pump disconnected, the idle also dropped. I adjusted the idle, and it also appears that the car runs (or seems to run) a lot better. Even my mileage seems better. How is that possible? Is it possible that the diverter valve was causing a vacuum leak and caused poor performance?
Im open to ideas.
Looks stock, but not pumping exhaust gas in the intake.
