Have a few questions about the engine in my 71. It currently has a T0701TRH 454 block and 353049 heads. Iron intake manifold.
Is this truck block physically taller than the stock 3963512 block. I thought I read somewhere that it's taller.
Is it a 2 or 4 bolt main.
Compression is 150, couple cylinders with 135 and 1 with 125.
Guess it needs some valve work. Doesn't smoke. Is this engine worth salvaging or just by a new one. I want more power so if I keep it I would want to put an air gap manifold, holley carb, bigger cam, headers and maybe aluminum heads instead of fixing the 049s.
I think the tall deck engines are frowned upon has far has performance goes.
you be better off finding and standard style BB. you wallet will probably feel better too has I hear those tall decks are expensive.
but anything is possible if you throw enough money at it.
His understanding is valid for the most part.
The tall deck blocks are capable of wonderful things if you have a lot of money. You can build a long rod configured stroker if that is your desire.
Since they were used as truck engines, with 4 ring pistons, small heads, and lack luster cam configuration, they are not a great motor to simply insert in a car and expect great things. Given the option of the tall deck truck 427 and an LS-5, I would take the LS-5 every time.
actually I miss read the original post,
if he has a 454, then it is a standard BB, 366 and 427 were that tall block cubic inches.
with 427 coming in standard and tall deck.
all standard style big blocks carry the same basic out side demenssions 396, 402,427, 454 all the same. I'm not sure weather its 2 or 4 bolt.
So does a standard block (ls5) have the same demensions as my tall deck truck block. Could I bolt on on air gap manifold on my truck block and still have the same hood clearance as an ls5 block with an air gap.
I could be mistaken but i think you'll need spacers to run a standard deck manifold on a tall deck block as the cylinder heads will be further apart. Not sure though

You are correct...but aftermarket manifolds are available
if its a 454 it a standard style big block not a tall deck. car and pick up truck 454 are the same casting block, tall deck 366 and 427 engines were more so in dumptrucks, farm trucks and the like.
yes you can get a airgap for you 454, just make sure what heads you have square or oval port.
