Sidepipes all the way. However, as previously noted do not buy the expensive, heavy and restrictive hooker glass pack inserts. Buy the JCL turbo baffles and you will get everything you are looking for. Great sound and even better performance. Just ask some of us who have bought them. Also I would not buy chrome again. I would have bought them and had them jet hot coated. Finish will last longer, dissipate heat faster, and won't need to be redone for a long long time. Trust me one you finally get them installed correctly you dont want to have to take them off. Let us know what you decide.
The JCL will help but still not be as good as true duals into Ultraflows, sidepipes are great for cosmetics but do detract from performance.
I don't see where the side pipes would loose to that combo of yours.
Besides a few angles in the hedders I don't believe that a 2.5" strait pipe to the back and into mufflers would out flow a side pipe with 4" OD.

Hi Paul, with the OEM '69 style would lose @20 - 25 hp with the Hooker and JCL would lose @ 15 hp, as per dyno.
