Default A/C question

hey guys, I know this has been discussed a million times over the years and I HAVE SEARCHED and read till my head is ready to explode but all the info. is either dated or not relevant to my situation.

here's the deal, doing a body off resto-mod on my '81, during it I'm replacing the entire A/c system. the only part that will be re-used is the small liquid line which will be cleaned out really well.

I already have the new R-4 compressor, hose set, dryer, evaporator, condensor and orifice tube.

question #1: which refrigerant should I go with, I don't think R-12 is a viable option due to expense. I've read about "hot shot" but haven't done much research on it.

question #2: do I need to change the o-rings if I go with the 134A? the ones I have now came on the replacement parts that I'm sure were designed for R-12.

question #3: can I use the same orifice tube that was designed for R-12 or do I need to get something different.

I've already removed and resealed the housings (engine bay and interior) with all new gaskets/sealants.

thanks in advance.

I would suggest staying with R12. It's not that much more expensive than R134a and will generally do a better cooling job. You can purchase it on Ebay for $20 to $25 per can.

If you are going to switch to the 134 you will need to change the orfice tube and o-rings, most new parts come with the correct o-rings for the conversion.
