I am looking for any suggestions regarding block inspection - cleanup & prep. that could be done on a new Dart SHP Block before I take it to the machine-shop to be honed & decked. I remember seeing a good write up on this, but I am not finding this information now - - Thanks to ALL for any help.
Did a 406 with a little M a few yrs back Carl at CNCblocks gave some good advice like checking for oil drainback holes lining up or need kissing up which they did may have been a coolant hole or two also I cant remember for the life of me but Carl knows these well.
I assumed (my fault) the cooling jacket would be clear/clean
Was advised to flush it out thank god I did TONS of metal came out along with the plugs when the machine punches the freeze plug holes. Boy would that have created problems!
Real nice piece though I will say that. Woth the money.
Just like any new part mockup measre inspect clean etc. Never assume anything .
All I did was Paint the block before I took it to the machine shop. I bolted on the oil pan and timing cover. I taped and or plugged at the holes like freeze plugs and oil sender. I screwed on an oil filter.
Use motor paint or POR. I used brake clean to remove any oil and air to blow dry.
The SHP is designed to clear a 3.750 stroke. About a year ago I did a 3.875 stroker. It makes the 400 into a 415 ci for the same cost other than the time to grind the pan rails to clear the rod bolts.
