I think I may have a tranny problem with my 69. When I push in the clutch sometimes (maybe 20% of the time) a grinding sound comes from the tranny area. If I lift up or switch gears it can go away. This is usually when I'm slowing for a stop sign or stopped. Kinda embarrassing.
I also can't seem to downshift like I can in my 71. In the 71 I just push the lever wherever I want and it downshifts to that gear. With the 69 it won't just push into a lower gear. I have to apply light pressure until it drops in on it's own. This could be just a different tranny as some older cars I've driven like a 57 Tbird were there same way.
I suspect this may be either a synchro problem or a clutch adjustment problem. What do you think?
Thanks!

Does it make noise when the clutch pedal is released? If not, then it most likely is the throw out bearing or something to do with the clutch assembly. Which if the clutch is not disengaging properly it could make the shifting difficult.
I just got done fighting the same thing. Would do it when I had the pedal all the way in or when it was engaging in first when I had to slip the clutch a bit and never did it while the clutch was fully engaged. Made a grinding noise in my case and was fairly loud and didn't do it all the time. I haven't heard the noise since I switched my pilot bearing. A couple of others on the forum pointed me in this direction (thanks guys). I like you thought throw out bearing first, but when I got in there it looked and felt just fine, so I changed the pilot bearing which I didn't see any lube left around it whatsoever. I got one of those GM roller pilot bearings. Driven if for over a 100 miles now and haven't heard a peep out of it. Mine was normally noisy first time I tried to engage the clutch in the morning or when I got the clutch pretty hot. It's a pain in the butt to change as you know if you ever pulled the trans before, but what you describe sounds like the problem I had.
