Default need help with installing new clutch return spring

I can't get the new clutch return spring mounted. I attached it to the firewall and am trying to stretch it far enough to connect the other end to the z-bar. Problem is the brake lines are in the way, so I can't get a good hold of the spring and the leverage to stretch it far enough to connect to the z-bar. Any tips on how to install the stupid thing?

Connect the spring to the linkage first, and stretch the other end to the firewall.

brake lines? there shouldn't be any brake lines there. the return spring is below the clutch push rod as it exits the firewall.

When I say brake lines I mean the hard lines running to the proportioning valve. They run close enough that I have to maneuver my hand around them thus preventing me from getting a good grip on the spring.

Tried it that way as well but still have the issue of trying to stretch the spring without the ability to get a good grip on it and the proper leverage. Plus, the hole on the firewall end is even smaller than the hole in the linkage. Can't believe something so simple is such a pain in the a$$.

I agree-connect to z bar first then use a pair of long nose "Vice Grips" to connect to hole in firewall.

Yup that that spring is a bit of a pain for sure! I attached the spring to firewall bracket first cuz the hole is so dang small and hard to see.I then use a length of mule tape or some kind of cord to help pull the spring enough then insert it into the Zbar.Works for me,hope this helps....

We ended up attaching a bungee cord and pulling it towards the z-bar. That allowed the opportunity to finally hook it into the z-bar. Pain in the rear but got it.
