I was just looking at the numbers on the deck of my old block (the one that came with my car). I know it is not the original engine, but would like to know what it is out of. The guy that sold it to me said it was out of a Corvette.
There are two sets of numbers on the deck with big and small letters. The big numbers: V0211CKC. The little ones: 165423469.
The bell housing: 3970010
By the filter pad: 010, 020, 143.
There are other numbers on the block that I can get if anyone thinks they are important for identifying the block. So if any of you engine code experts can help me, it would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
The big number decoded:
V = Plant engine was manufactured at, I don't know the plant letters, but my stock 81 engine has the same letter.
0211 = Engine was made in Feburary, 1911, I think you must have read this wrong.
CKC = 1976, L-82, 210 hp, Automatic
350. V0211 = Feb 11 Flint plant.
in 1975 CKC=205Hp Auto
in 1976 CKC=210Hp Auto
But the VIN derivatives would be:
1975: J5S4xxxxx
1976: L6S4xxxxx
Looks like 1976 and you misread the second set.... Is it possibly L6S423469 ? Then it's from car #23469 off the assy, line. :)
In 1970 my stamp pad reads V0212CTG 70S404102
V-flint, 0212=Feb 12 CTG=300Hp TH400.
70S4 = 1970 vette 04102 = VIN last 5 digits.
This is a 3970010 350 block. I don't know what the numbers by the filter pad mean. ~Juliet
...the first character in the group of small letters is definately a 1. But the 3rd character is an S, not a 5 as I originally posted.
That sounds correct. For a '76 Vette the engine VIN stamp would be 16S423469 for the 23,469th Vette built during 76 production. (1=chevy, 6=year, S=St Louis assembly plant, 423469=last six of VIN of car originaly installed in).

Tom, I guess they changed the stamp pad. Because in '70 the VIN derivative was the last 9 digits of the VIN. I *A*S*S* umed that it was the same in '76. That'll teach me. :crazy: At least he now knows what corvette it came from. :)
To sum it all up; Engine block is out of a 76 Vette, L-82 auto, built Feb. 11 1976. The 010 and 020 numbers by the oil filter stand for 1% tin and 2% nickle, I believe (same numbers cast under the timing cover). Don't know what the 143 stands for though. It is a four bolt main block with a forged crank.
