what exactly is this for?
do i need to have it there for some reason?

The ignition shielding was to cut down on radio interference. Try it without it and if your radio is okay you can do without it. Most modern ignition parts already take care of the interference problems.

With today's new style of wire, your radio intereference is virtually eliminated adn you can most likely do without the shield. If you don't like it, take it off and see if you have static free radio operations.

It's there for radio noise, if you can hear the radio at all the exhaust is too quiet!!!! BTW, it's metal....or should be....never know what with repro parts..

My 82 didn't have it when I bought her and I don't notice and static. Of course I'm listening to Iron Maiden, White Zombie, etc. at blasting levels through the CD player :D

Mine's actually plastic with a foil lining on the inside...

The only reason I haven't pulled mine yet is because there are two clips for the hood cable running to the passenger side. I guess I just need two straps to hold it down in another place.
