I have a 74 Corvette with a 70 vintage 350 engine and a very sick Quadrajet. I've had it rebuilt but the bowls still drain when it sits and then backfires through the carb until it warms up. I would like to purchase a carburetor and adapter for it now with the intention of buying a second carburetor and a dual quad manifold when I get the money. I thought an Edelbrock 1400 or 1405 would be my best choice but was told by the tech folks at Summit that they did not know if there was a combination of carb, adapter, and air cleaner that would fit under the stock hood. This is for street use and I was also concerned about installing the carb with the electric choke on a car with a mechanical choke. Has anyone done this and can you please help me out with a selection of products for this application.
My best advice is get in touch w/Lars. He is the carb guru around here. You may want to stay w/quadrajet if you motor isnt too modified. I have 74 w/Air Gap RPM & 750 Demon carb. A drop base air cleaner was necessary.
Since you have a 74 with a 70 engine numbers matching probably does not mean too much. A quality rebuilt unit is about $200. A new Edelbrock Q-Jet can run $450 or more.
Turbo-Jet, I sent it out for rebuild so have no idea if the well plugs were properly sealed with epoxy. Thanks, The Rebuilt or replacement Q-Jet is probably the simplist solution but it doesn't lend itself to a Dual Quad set up later. I sure do appreciate the input from everyone.

I've had one Holley carb rebuilt by a pro and it was the worst mistake I've made in a long time. If you have half a brain, if you're careful and thorough, you can do this yourself. Once you've determined the carb you need ....take it step by step and things should work just fine. I've rebuilt my tri-power setup twice over the years....myself and have had good luck. It's not that hard.....
Here's a little secret: SummitRacing.com has "remanufactured" Edelbrock QJets available only on their website. I got a 1903 for $319.95. (You probably need a 1902.) That's well over a hundred bucks less than brand new -- and these carbs are "almost new."
These carbs are warranty returns (less than 6 months old) that had some malfunction. They're put on the bench, completely checked, tested and set up. If any parts need replacing, they use new parts. I'm very happy with mine.

Most carbs returned are not defective but either grossly misadjusted or the problem was with some other part of the car ie. ignition, fuel pump etc.
Very good advice if that is your interest. Also, review the post I put up earlier about National Carbs and Recarbco. One has a 1 yr and other has a lifetime warranty.
