Getting ready to install the intake on my new crate engine. First time doing any engine assembly and I want to confirm #1 TDC before putting the intake on so I can easily set the distributor and I have a quick question.
1) Put engine at TDC by rotating until I saw cylinder #1 (drivers front) exhaust open then close, intake open then close, then continued until 0 degrees on balancer lined up with 0 degrees on timing indicator. Correct?
2) How to you torque the middle intake bolts on an Edelbrock RPM Intake? My torque wrench doesn't even come close to fitting before it hits the plenum. I saw a youtube video where the guy suggested getting a feel from one of the outer bolts with a wrench then "feel" the torque on the center bolts. This just doesn't seem like the most scientific approach.
Your TDC method should work. Both lifters for #1 should be down on the base circle of the cam.
The intake manifold solution, though not scientific, will work because intake bolt torque isn't too critical. Don't overtighten.
After you lay a nice bead of RTV on the front and back with the gaskets tacked in place gently lower the intake down. Install all the bolts and tighten them to just snug. Let the RTV harden overnight. Come back in the morning and tighten them good and tight. No torque wrench required..
