'79 Automatic Speedometer Gears

Default '79 Automatic Speedometer Gears

So, I finally got through the emissions test, and now its on to the next thing. My speedometer worked ok when I bought the car, but it was always a little jumpy. About 200 miles ago, it stopped working entirely.

Broken cable, I thought, so I found where the lower cable hooks to the transmission and spun it around with a drill. Well, the needle was jumpy like before but the speedo worked. That means that both cables are good, the cruise control transducer is "good" and the gauge itself is fine. I took the upper cable off the cruise transducer and spun it with a drill, and there was no bouncyness in the needle. The lower cable also moves freely, so I took apart the transducer and tried to clean it. When I put it back the speedometer needle was less bouncy, but the transducer is still not spinning freely. I'm admittedly in over my head with something like the cruise transducer, so unless someone has a tip as to how to clean it properly I think I am just going to get one of the large one-piece cables (for a no-cruise car) and bypass it entirely. The vacuum servo was not hooked up to the throttle when I bought the car, and I wouldn't use the cruise even if it was.

That leaves me with why it doesn't work at all. I believe the transducer provided to much resistance in system, but no matter what my driven gear in the transmission is sheared in half. It is a 20 tooth gear and looks like so


Also, the drive gear seems to be worn, and I think I may as well replace it while I have the tail housing off the transmission. It is orange, and appears to have 6 teeth. Looks like so


I was reading on this website and this one, and according to both neither of my gears should exist. The 20t driven gear should be blue, and the "6t" drive gear should not even exist at all

I'm pretty lost here, and my car won't be going anywhere until I put the tail housing and drive shaft back, AFTER I replace the drive gear. That means I gotta drive my dad's Yamaha Vino 125 to work, at a super/turbocharging shop no less . I can't find anywhere local that has the gears, and I just made a large order from Ecklers and don't want to pay their shipping extortion again. That leaves me with ebay.

I found out today that 1 rotation at the rear tires is about 3.75 rotations at the driveshaft (3.70, or 3.73 gears?) I have 225/70/15 tires on some shiny aluminum wheels. How would I figure out exactly what kind of gears I need for the speedo?

Also, I bought two u-joints today for the drive shaft, but I cannot get the old ones out. I removed the clips with some penetrating oil, but the u joint will not budge. Do I take it to work tomorrow and get it with more oil and a hydraulic press, or am I missing something?

Are there any other while-I'm-at-it jobs while the drive shaft is out (seal in the tail housing, etc?) or should I just get my gears and get back on the road?

EDIT 2: Wait. I was counting teeth looking at the edge of the gear. Do I need to count them looking at the diameter (face?) of the gear?

TCI would be a good source and others.
you can mix and match with the gears that are available to make it work...btw both those are available, look more than one place
