Hello all, I am replacing the exhaust on my 74 L82 and would like to replicate the original sound as much as possible. I don't have the money to buy NOS, if I could even find them, so hopefully there is someone out there who has first hand knowledge of the construction of the 74 system.
Specifically, were the resonators true resonators, i.e. hollow? or were they more like glasspaks? What about the mufflers, size, shape, and internal construction? How many baffles and their layout?
what resonators on an original factory exhaust? pipes and two mufflers. If you look at vendor sites you can get a complete systems for about $400. I dont think too many people have cut open their mufflers to give you internal construction information.
I remember hearing a brand new '74 (an L82/4 speed) for the first time and was convinced that someone had shoved a potato up it's pipes. I wouldn't spend much time or money on tracking down a correct system.

Potato up its pipes . But they did have resonators. What their purpose was I do not know.
To OP, don't waste your time. You will not find NOS. Most major suppliers will provide you with the bulbous "round" mufflers that sound "OK" but look like h***.
I remember when I first got my 74 with original exhaust it was quiet at idle and around town cruising (some 10 years ago). I now have the 2.5" CC exhaust with 'stock' hide away mufflers and its just too loud, as in it draws too much attention. Added a H pipe, it's a bit better but not worth the effort. I was wondering if adding universal cats would reduce the noise (and help the exhaust smell). I listened to a 76 this weekend with original exhaust and wish mine sounded like that.
