Default '75 rebuild

I have a '75 that I want to get back on the road but before I do, I need to know WITHOUT A DOUBT, that I can get it inspected. It has 4 into 1 collector sidepipes, meaning no cats. Is this going to be an issue or is the fact that it is so old going to allow me to get by.

Removing them is not an option. :chevy

It all depends on what the smog ****'s look for. All I can tell you is what they look for in Colorado.

1. sidepipes with no cats  They will reject it before you even roll it into the garage. 75 came with 2-1-2 exhaust.
2. A.I.R. pump > has to be there in colorado
3. fuel restrictor> the little plug that only fits unleaded pumps

These are the biggies. I would say texas would check the exhaust for sure and possibly the A.I.R pump...but you never know.

Boy am I glad I live in NH for this reason. Live Free or Die. I pick #1.
Currently, we don't even have emmisions testing. As far as custom mods go - it depends on the shop that does the inspection. I brought my 1981 Mustang in a few years ago - 4cyl turned into 302 5sp. They rejected it - due to the fact that they never even had a 302 that year. Hmm - all solid - all stock - but not allowed for this year. My 'vette (only had a couple years) has had little trouble at inspection. Last time - the guy pointed out MISSING body mounts (#4) - and still gave it a sticker !!!

PS - the Mustang has been sitting in the yard since getting the 'vette - so don't chew me up for owning it. I was young and stupid. Now I'm old.

I don't think you have to have the cats as it is over 25 years old and thus exempt from emissions testing. However, just call a MOGO and ask. They are the most stringent of all inspection stations and can tell you for sure. If nothing else, you can just weld on some dummy cats to pass visual inspection. Like I said, over 25 means no emmisions testing!

Definitely rebuild, there will always be ways around inspection. :yesnod:

Federal law prohibits removal of any emissions equipment that was installed new no matter what the age of the car. Whether or not the state decides to conduct emissions inspections and enforce that law is a matter for the state to decide.

I know people who remove the sidepipes and headers, reinstall the stock exhaust, pass emissions, go home and reverse the process till needed again. :smash:

Although I live in the Chicago "containment area", we in Northwest Indiana have to have our cars inspected (unlike the rest of Indiana). Anyway, they do not check prior to 1976 so my 1975 is exempt.

With respect to 1976 and later, in the past a couple of the guys in my club have 1976s and 1977's with side pipes. They were able to get an exemption from the EPA which restricts them to, I believe, 2,500 miles a year.

Check with the testers and someone in the EPA. You may not actually have a problem.

Out here in CA, rules are:

30+ years old exempt
must have original equipment (smog pump, gas cap, cat verter, etc)
must have original setup(2-1-2, no sidepipes)
must be smogged every 2 years

I don't think it's as bad in TX, but probably won't pass with sidepipes without an exemption

Look on the back of the last registration notification that you received from the state for any of your cars. The requirements for emissions inspections are listed. Cars older than 25 years are completely exempt. :D

Yeah exempt from emmisions testing - but must still have original equipment. This is the law in most states. BUT - All you have to do is find a privately owned inspection station that is run by a Corvette fan. Usually they will let visual inspection slide, as long as the safety equipment is OK.
