Hi, I'm contemplating an L88 hood for my '80 'vette. What I am envisioning is a 14" diameter air cleaner, high enough to clear the HEI distributor, with a flange around the bottom, and an airbox in the hood, with a round hole in it that will close over the air cleaner and seal against the flange. So, basically, the entire air filter will be up inside the hood scoop, isnulated from hot, underhood air. I don't like the stock L88 air cleaner setup, the engine has no air filter when the hood is up, and I'd have to monkey with it to get it to fit my non-stock induction system, anyway. (SBC, 2101 Performer manifold, Holley 1850, 1" spacer, just barely fits under the stock '80 hood) if anybody has done anything like this, I'd appreciate a look-see at how you did it. Thanks,
Eckler L-88 hood eliminates wiper panel and wiper hide underneath.Smokey Yunick prove beyond doubt the highest airflow is at the base of windshield and then GM adapted it a year later for big block corvette.
Maybe you could make an air chamber and modify your air cleaner like I did. You could use a taller air filter that raises up into the hood. I'm using a 14"x3" for mine, but maybe instead use a 14"x6".
why does no filter when the hood is open cause an issue with you?
i agree an air chamber , a sheet of aluminum with a hole cut for the air cleaner to fit into will work.

You would be better off using a piece of fiberglass, less weight than the aluminum would be and easier to work with. I added thermal insulation over my air chamber to help keep the heat out. It pretty much stays at the outside ambient temperature.

I just don't like the air filter in the hood thing. I like the air filter attached to the engine.

Outstanding, Mike80! That is very close to what I envision, except it will be an L88 hood.
