My 77 has an 87 model engine and 200R4 in it. The temperature sending unit for the 77 is too big to fit in the 87 head. What are the guys with newer engines running it their vette so that the gauge will work? Will the 87 sending unit work with the older gauges.
Infact, atleast they used to be in there, when you buy a new temp gauge, you get an assortment of brass(I believe they are) fittings to fit whatever year/make you have, and you'd just screw one into another if need be, and make the connection correctly. Like was stated, you can buy the correct fittings in the local plumbing supply store, or possibly the auto parts store, but now days in packages which cost a small fortune, unless you have an OLD NAPA or one of the OLDIES that have the separate bolt/fittings drawers, or if you have any motor-head friends, surely one of them has afew fittings left from temp gauges they've installed in different vehicles over the years. (Now that was a sentence w/ plenty of commas, LOL!) In short, (but this one has not been, LOL!,) it's a simple fix. Too bad none of the site members are near you to give you a hand.
BTW, if anyone near me ever needs any help doing anything, even pulling or installing an engine, just give me a yell. I'd be more than glad to lend a hand, and I'm no hacker, believe in good clean work done correctly. Good Luck, my friend.
buy a neck down adapter, any plumbing store, home depot, etc.
If you use a different sender, your gauge won't read correctly. Found out many years after I bought my car that it was the wrong unit and never read correctly.
Just for explanation. The reducer screws on the original sender unit and the threads at the other end of the reducer are small enough to fit into your 87 heads.
I understand what you mean, but is that what you did as a workaround or is it a suggested fix? If you used that as a permanent fix did it interfere with your headers?
I drilled and tapped the head to 1/2" npt so the original sender would fit. Others have cut down and rethreaded the original sender to 3/8" npt to fit the head.
I personally just put it on the front drivers side intake manifold, but all three options will work. Interference w/ heads would depend on what type you have and how much clearance is there.
I used Scottw's suggestion on my ZZ4. You have to use your original sender to make the gauge work correctly. Lou.
I had the same problem, L98 aluminum heads with the small hole for the temp sending unit. Research showed no small sender provides the correct resistance (ohms) for the gauge to work accurately. The solution is to use one of the large holes in the intake manifold and extend the temp wire over to the sender in the new location. Piece of cake!
The sending unit is visible under the fuel line. The gauge will be just as accurate as before. The new location is so close to the original that it doesn't matter.

I did this with my L98 heads. I think the machine shop charged me $25. I have a new engine at the machine shop and they are doing the same thing with the AFR heads.
