Default C3 Exhaust Option Question

I need to replace my stock exhaust on a 68 427 as it is at end of life. Research points to iron exhaust with ceramic but I am interested in headers for performance and big block sound (not interested in side pipes with noise in my ear). I am also concerned about not generating too much heat under the engine. Curious what some of you guys have done and your results?

From experience, headers are somewhat noisier and hotter than factory manifolds simply due to the wall thickness of the pipes and that they tend to convey head further under the car. Wrap the headers in heat tape or buy ceramic coated ones to minimize but not eliminate the header "sound" and the extra heat. Unless you are running an upgraded engine setup, stock appeals to me. I run headers on both my small-block Corvettes, but one needs it and the other came that way. It is totally your choice.

I had cast manifolds on my Monte Carlo and headers on my vette with the same 427. But dyno says no noticeable difference and the manifolds flow well, seal up great and last forever!!!

great feedback. I will see if I can find heades with ceramic....if not I will go with the heat tape. Thanks again!

I have a pair of Hooker Super comps that I just took off my '68 427. They are ceramic chrome coated on the outside and thermal barrier ceramic coated on the inside. I took them off because I decided to go back to the original exhaust manifolds. I also have a set of collectors/pipes (also ceramic coated) to connect to a factory exhaust system. All are in great condition. If you're interested, PM me. I won't let them go for nothing but my price is much more reasonable than a new set of ceramic coated Hookers.

BTW, I've found that factory applied ceramic coatings are junk. If you decide to buy new, I think you're better off buying a bare set, mock up the fit (that way if you have to make minor mods you won't damage the coating), then have them coated by a reputable shop that specializes in applying these kinds of coatings.
