I noticed there is a whine in my transmission in 1,2,3rd gears. Car is a stock 81 with 4 speed stick. I have heard that some 4 speeds whine in the reduction gears. Is this normal for this transmission or is the gear oil possibly low? How is the oil level checked? and finally if it is low, then what weight oil should I use in it?
fill plug on passenger side of trans, 80w90 gear oil, drain plug on bottom, maybe a drain and refill is in order. fill to the threads on the side fill. when in lower gears you are putting power through the cluster shaft therefore there will be a slight increase in gear noise. 4th is straight through.
Thanks for the reply. I should probably change it anyway considering the oil (if any, haven't checked it yet) that is in there is probably from 1981 lol. Anyway should I run conventional or synthetic oil or does it really make a difference?
I prefer Syn but there is a 75w90 semi-syn as well. Wal-mart has the 75w90 semi-syn pretty cheap.
But make sure the car is lifted even (front and rear). If not your trans oil level will be off. Also get a can of brake cleaner to clean off any wet spots and check for leaks.
