I don't know, but I know the dashes changed. Try to get a '78-'79 speedo since they have the same dash.

The 81 and 82 speedos are unique as they have the optical rotor for the VSS (vehicle speed sensor) built into them.
You can get the 165 mph speedo from ecklers or do as merlin did and have clockdoc (I think that's where merlin send his) rework it

I was under the impression the 165 was discontinued.

Yeah, but Clockdoc is very expensive, but does a good job.
IMHO, John at Redline does just as good work, and can get you into a rebuilt unit or trade for a 140mph unit for around 60.00 with exchange.

For over 200$???? Damn, I have mine lying here collecting dust and it's only got 2600 miles on it.
Here's the back of the speedo. The hole is where the VSS optical head plugs in
The optical head in place & yellow box. The ECM cable plugs into this yellow box.

Re: replacing Speedo in an 82 (Twinnie)
Mine was brand new, only had 6 or so miles on it. I just took it out of the box when I bought it/sold it and tested it.
I had it for 2 years just sitting in the box.
It will sell if you put it on e-bay.

140 will be fine.. I doubt she will be going over 120 very often, even after the drive train changes. I keep seeing images of Fiberglass shearing away at high speed ;-/
