Default Starter question

Hello Guys,

I have a huge problem. I am trying to buy one of those cool high torque lightweight gear reduction starters to put in my 1972 vette with a 383. The original starter from the factory bolted up fine so I assume I will need a staggered bolt set-up. I read on another posting that the Inline bolts will work too by moving it around or something... it was confusing hints the posting. I just want to buy a smaller high torque starter but the right one. Please help!

Steve

I'm confused, why wouldn't you simply buy whatever mimics what's on your car?

Now you've got me trying to remember if there's a block that allows both patterns - and I'm not remembering one.

that said, there are different starters for the number of teeth on your flywheel either a 153 or a 168 tooth. Obviously the 153 tooth flywheel is smaller than a 168, so the bolt flange will allow the starter to move closer to the center via a 3rd bolt hole in the starter mounting flange.

Odds are, and this IS a guess, you have a 168 tooth flywheel

Yes its a 168. I cant seem to find a mini starter with a staggered bolt pattern. thats why I am here, every shop I call or online store has no idea that they make staggered or inline 168 tooth or 153 tooth...
I would rather buy the staggered bolt cause i know thats what I have

I used one of these on my'79 355. its gear reduction, light weight, easily available. its what gm used on their late model 5.7 trucks. works great , staggered bolt pattern. DB electric has some too. good luck. OLDAlak. has a better price!! beat me too it.

Yea after the last thread I realized I was really close so I am buying the parts I need to at least hear it purr... some friends are coming over that know nothing about cars and I hoping between some beers and b/sin we can get it done in a day or two still waiting on starter and new salt but I might just get it all done with the old parts and I stall new parts when they come in

The hardest part is finding parts that are not chrome I want it completely plucked out with small accents like aluminum intake radiator and carb

I know you already bought the staggered starter, but just for next time or in case you're wondering, look on the block where your starter bolts onto. You'll probably see a second drilled and tapped hole in line with the other starter bolt, as well as the staggered drilled and tapped hole. So, yes an inline starter will work as well. I went with an inline on my 72's engine. It's the original block but It too is now a stroker. I have an 11" flywheel (168 tooth). I have no i idea whether 1 style is better than the other, but do know that the summit brand starter I bought fit great and has excellent clearance for headers. Works really good too.
