My new Dynomax Ultra-flows came last friday and since I had gotten them from Mid-America as a kit that included the connectors and tail pipes I thought they would be a fairly simple job. Guess What? Yes, the configuration is different and required a little ingenuity to get them mounted right. The original pipes have an offset/offset configuration and the ultra-flows duplicated that. But the connector that comes as part of the kit connects the muffler with the inlet on the inboard side rather than the outboard like the original. This throws the tailpipe about 6 inches outboard and the hangers don't match up. I got some universal hangers and managed to get everything hung properly but it sure would be nice if things worked like advertised. BTW, I love the Ultra-flows. They are a little quieter at idle and cruise than my old "stock" type mufflers but have the nicest tone when you get on it a little and they absolutely rap when you wind them up. I'm very pleased with the product just not real happy with the kit.
Re: Why are bolt-ons never really bolt-ons? (vettfixr)
The answer to your question is: that @#$-hole Murphy works on cars, too.
Besides, what would we do if this stuff worked as advertised: I just spent 2 evenings mounting my timing gear and 2-piece cover. When I installed the gears, they didn't line up, and I had to machine the back face of the cam timing gear. Then, when I used the cam button the MANUFACTURER SPECIFIED, the timing cover wouldn't fit, so I had to machine that, too. Fortunately, I have access to a lathe. But what a pain in the posterior - 5 hours for a 30 minute job. :mad
Oh well, if it was easy everybody would do it.

Gotta read between the lines, when it says bolt on it means just that, bolt on. Now if it said bolts on in the correct postition, then you got a gripe. That is frustrating.
Re: Why are bolt-ons never really bolt-ons? (Fevre)
Because if they were advertised as "Will bolt on only after several hours of adjustments, modifications, dismantling of completely unassociated parts, the consumption of far too much alcohol than is good for you in one go, tears of frustration & a good slanging match with the wife/GF/neighbours because of the use of power tools at 3.00am in the morning (the manufacturer will not accept liability if part is altered in any way)" then very few of us would buy them

i was reading about a bolt on modern front suspension for my 61. in the fine print it says SOME WELDING REQUIRED  :mad
Good grief man! Of course you've got to weld some bits on. If you didn't then you wouldn't have anything to bolt the new part onto..... & then it wouldn't be a bolt on part! It stands to reason, doesn't it  :smash: :jester
