Is anyone using them? I'm planning on getting one and I was wondering if there are any reasons that I shouldn't. It seems like a good idea and I figured there must be a reason they aren't installed at the factory.
mine has one and it's handy. a lot easier to drain than trying to tilt the pan.
it was on it when I got it so don't know where it came from. have seen them in Jegs and Summit catalogs I think.
It is probably a good thing for two reasons. It makes changing fluid a lot neater if you just replace the fluid, the pan won't get wiped out with a rag ,which is a very BAD thing to do. Lint from the rag is not good and in some cases it can cause valves in the transmission to stick. NEVER ever wipe the pan with a rag or paper towel. Rinse and blow dry is the correct thing.
I just installed one, after dropping the pan a few times without it. One of those things I kept meaning to do, but never did. Haven't had a chance to use it yet. Remember to kind of scope it out and put it where it wont interfere with any moving parts once the pan is re-installed.
I bought a finned cast-aluminum pan from B&M for my TH400. Due to differen thickness of the flange, I had to modify (cutting and welding) the bracket for the shifter cable as it is attached with two of the pan bolts.
Just a tip to note before you plan installation.
You should be fine though with a stamped steel pan.
Re: Transmission pans with drain plugs? (jerryp58)
I found that using a vacuum pump throught the filler tube works if you don't have the drain plug but it sure is nice if if you need to replace the pan anyway. The vacuum pump is the only way I can change the motor oil in my boat so I use it for the times I need to work on my trans when its needed.

While I would have liked the factory to install drain plugs, look at it from GM/Chevy standpoint.
Another place to lose the fluid- possible new trans. under warranty!
Possible shops would just change fluid & not filter- possible new trans. under warranty!
I dont like the idea with a drain plug on the tranny.I think that if you have one of those you dont change the filter as you should do when changing oil.Of course you guys would drain the tranny, and then remove the pan to prevent any spill. But wheres the sport in that..
