Who has good luck buying a complete brake kit. I need to put a new set of calipers and soft lines on a 69 driver. Any advice on who has a good product. Not sure if the brakes on car are original, I will keep them for a later resto if they are.
I'm sure there are many opinions but I went with the Wilwood set on my '78. I knew I was going to be redoing the brakes all around so waited for them to have a sale and picked up the parts then.
Unless you plan on racing your C3, I would stick with the OEM calipers, either regular seals or lip seals, if the car sits most of the time-stainless steel sleeved. I don't think original OEM delcos new is necessary since the aftermarket SS calipers are very good. I have regular seal SS calipers from Vette Brakes on my 78 since 1985, regular seals (O ring seals not available back then) on a car that sits 99.9% of the time with zero issues-Change the brake fluid often-every 3-4 years-and you are good to go. Corvette brakes are terrific, even back then, if the rest of the system is kept up-rotor runout, brake fluid changes, master cylinder etc-4 piston fixed calipers at each wheel with 12 inch rotors-vented front and rear. Try finding that setup on newer cars. As already mentioned, I also have braided steel brake hoses for a harder firmer pedal. Go with a top brake pad-don't cheap out on the brake pads-like Performance Friction (which I have) or Hawk HPS. The car stops!!!
Advance auto has calipers for $68 with a $30 core charge. I just dropped my old calipers on the counter, swapped the boxes and took the new ones home. Call them in advance so they can stock them.
Maybe it's just me, but I am not a fan of any parts from the mass market auto parts retailers whether it was for a C3 or even my daily drivers-Chrsyler 300 Limited 3.5L V6 or my 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix-Autozone, Advanced Auto Parts etc. With that said, I just purchased Chrysler Hemi dual piston rebuilt front calipers painted red from A-1 Cardone to replace the Single piston caliper on my 300 Limited. Going from 12 inch vented front discs to drilled/slotted 13.6 inch hemi rotors with SS brake lines and Performance Friction pads in place of the crap ceramic pads. But I digress!
