you push the clip in and pull on the cable. Be careful you dont get lube into the speedometer head.

Will take you and a partner less than 20 mins and 1 beer each.

1. locate the cable at the back of the speedo. pop the hood.
2. get a friend to pull firmly on the cable (not tug unless instructed by you!) from under the hood, while you contort yourself in a yoga position to get to the clip and cable with one hand.
3. press the spring clip inwards on the speedo body (towards the rear of the car) while the cable is being pulled, it should pull straight out with little resistance, or order your buddy to tug harder... I can't recall the firewall grommet, but I think it's the big 4-hole one that's easy to pop out. Replacements are commonly available if you break it.
4. disconnect from transmission so you can get to both ends (no need to remove from car if not replacing).
5. pull the cable out from the sheath and inspect. Any fraying or damage, I would replace. Any damage to the sheath may be OK if not too badly gouged, cracked or kinked.
6. clean cable of any grease/oil/vaseline/crap previous owners have applied. Check sheath to ensure that's clean also.
7. Lube the cable with graphite and place back in sheath.
8. reverse the process, so have your buddy gently PUSH the cable onto the back of the speedo once in place guided by your hand. No need to push the clip, it should lock on to the outer cable with a firm 'click'.
9. Time for that second beverage.

Personally, I would replace.

I might be wrong but I never had any luck with the dry lube.
I usually pull the cable through the fire wall and pull the inner for inspection. With the sheathing standing straight up I drip gear lube down it and grease the cable with lithium grease. Vette's have some really tight curves and I never had one break after I did this....
