Default Transmission choices

So i have a 1974 vette that im putting a new tranny in, and i was wondering what route would be the best for a street cruiser that still can giddyup and go.

Engine;
400 SBC
Vortec heads
Edelbrock airgap/dual plane 1500-6500rpm
Mild cam (.477 intake, .480 exhaust) 1000-5500rpm
Holley 750 carb
everything else is pretty much stock, crank, pistons, ect

What was in the car when i got it was a Turbo 400. I also have a Saganaw 4 speed that i had for a Camaro build that i might be selling. Now I was thinking of going with a M21 or a Borg Warner Super T10, but im not sure how everything will work together. I know that they can handle the power but im wondering if there are any other options out there, if the saganaw or the Turbo 400 will work. Any suggestions?

Use the TH400; it's a good transmission.

The TH400 is a good strong transmission and would be the easiest to put back into the Vette and before the lighter weight TH350 became very popalar most early models had the 400 tranny.

Performing a 4 Speed conversion from a transmission out of the camaro might require the drive shaft to resized if the output on the transmission is a different length and the center console switched out with a console from a 1972 to 1976 Corvette with a 4 Speed tranny. It can be done. They sell all the console parts online.

The clutch pedal and other parts associated with the conversion might be a little hard to find. There are junk yards across the USA that cater to old cars still.

The TH400 with a good rebuild and a shift kit will be way less hassle. And you'll never miss a gear.

I have the same car you do and went with a 200-4R. I knew I wanted to stay automatic. The 200-4r has a slightly lower 1st gear than the TH400 and a slightly deeper overdrive than the 700-R4. If you have the right gears and motor it could be a great upgrade.

Another option to consider.

If you want to play around with different trans/gear ratios this site is fun.
