Default Motor hungry 4 cams

When I took the original com out the #4 cam was eaten away, I replace the cam with a Crane energizer .440" 1.6 roller tip rockers trickflow heads and .100" longer pushrods.
Now (1 year and 2000 miles later) I found that I have #4 and #12 lobes and lifters total Kaput. I am pretty shure I have done exactly the instructions.
The Question: What do I do? I don't want to put a new cam and find it dead after a few miles.
By the way what cam do you recomend 4 a car like mine?
Thanks a lot!!!!

Pacha, the problem is that sometimes we just can't get lucky....when metal particles circulate throughout an engine, and the replacement doesn't work out...
95% change you need a rebuild...that means take the engine to a machine shop and have it totally rebuilt...block has to be boiled and cleaned totally, crank needs polished, maybe turned....
pistons need replaced, rods sized, engine balanced...
cam needs replaced, obviously, lifters also, of course...
heads need work also...
now when things are completely clean and checked out, it should be ok...
but not untill then.....
once in a great while a cam/lifter replacement will be fine, but if it's not after a few miles...forget about it....don't waste any more time and money...
metal particles where they don't belong will just destroy more parts, if not destroy the entire engine....

To start with, check the valve springs on those cylinders for coil bind

There's a hidden plug down the hole on the back of the block rail. It devides the passages for filtered and non fitlered oil. If the plug is missing ditry oil will bypass the filter.

Ah, I see. I thought maybe there was some overflow type thing that let oil bypass the filter and if you plugged it all oil went to the filer. Guess not.

Thanks Twinnie

Nop, oil filter by-pass not plugged I thought it was not necessary.
Guess I will have to pull the motor out
maybe it was just bad luck or an improper break in???
I did not run into coil bind since the heads are supposed to support .520” and I am at .440 plus the 1.6 rockers.
Any cam recommendation for a street motor? I will be using Trickflows and 10:1 comp.
Thanks

You already have the heads get the motor overhauled you can use stock crank to save money, flat top pistons and CompCams XE268 or 270H for a budget motor that could push 350 - 400HP :D

if the motor is in good shape, just plug the bypass, change oil & filter and cam & l.

when it is apart check oil flow at #4, by having friend use drill to spin oil pump

Pacha

When I bought my trick flow's there was no mentiton of special length pushrods but if you check the Summit catalog, there is now a mention of special length pushrods. I think you need +.10 but I would contact summit or trick flow. Even you did not buy them there just say you are interested in them and they should tell what length you need. Please post what you find. I am not running my heads right but will be sometime in the near future.

Thanks

Chris

Fevre,
I do use (was using) the .100" longer pushrods as Trickflow recomends
Trickflows are great with my small cam and 3.08 rear the best I got was 5,30 0-60 MPH and 13,4S 101MPH 1/4. You will have to find a smaller but electricaly compatible water temp sender.
Will the .454lift 272 duration with 1.6/1 rocker make +-360 HP ?
Regards

Thanks Pacha

BTW my temp sending unit from my old heads fit directly into the new heads. I keep itching to put the heads on my new motor but am going to wait to put em on my 383 when I get it rebuilt.

If a flat tappet lifter cannot rotate it will wear. Are your lifter bores in good shape ? What kind of oil pressure are you making, camshafts are basically splash lubricated. Consider a high volume oil pump.

The lifters bores look OK no sharp edges, scratches, etc.
Oil pressure when hot is 16 psi @ idle and 50 psi @ 3000RPM is that low?
