Default Testing instrument panel indicator lamps

On my 1970, is it possible to test an indicator lamp (specifically the high beam indicator) by running a jumper wire from the loose socket to ground, or would that create a danger of frying something? I'd connect the jumper to the small metal retaining tangs, which are I believe are what grounds the socket to the cluster. I have the dash pulled out, the socket is hanging, but I want to make sure it works before plugging it into the cluster. It's a @#$%&!! to get that socket plugged in.

Yes that will work or you can see if you have 12 volts to the center of the light socket.

I did think of checking the socket for 12V with a test pencil...but want to check it with a bulb in the socket to make sure that the new bulb works before plugging the socket into the dash. Thanks for your reply, I was pretty sure grounding the socket would be alright, now I know for certain.
