Default Replacing drivers door hinge pins

Can I replace the drivers door hinge pins and bushings one at a time or do I have to do the upper hinge and lower hinge both at once ? Can I do it with out removing the door? I also have power windows so is it a pain to do?

The lower hinge pin/bushing is relatively easy. The upper hinge pin is a PITA because of clearance issues with the door skin. (I Bubba'd mine by installing the upper pin upside down. Shhh. Don't tell anybody.)

Yes you can do them one at a time. Open the door and block it up and secure it from moving.
But, it is easier if you can remove the top hinge, as if you had everything open like when you are doing interior work

There is a YouTube video out there showing a guy replacing the hinge pins and bushings. That is exactly how I did mine working by myself. I just replaced the upper pin and bushing because I could not get the lower pin out without removing the side pipes. The top hinge was where all the wear was anyway, the bottom hinge did not have much play at all. So, I replaced the top pin and bushing only and the door closes perfectly.

One other tip: Once I had the access panels of the door, I sprayed white paint inside on the hinges before I unbolted them so that I would be able to put it back exactly where it was when it left the factory. When I finished and bolted it back together, the door closed perfectly with no additional adjustment needed.

Here is a site that shows how to replace the door pins and bushings.

Be careful of the top pin hitting the body when you are removing it.

Just two things i did to make it safer, open door and put a good thick rag or mat between door and body so as the pin's come out the door doesnt move and chip the paint (it will, trust me) and tap the top pin out but as it gets real close to the door skin place a sheet of nylon (flexible kitchen cutting boards work really well) so the pin skids on it instead of your paint. Dont remove the door or hinges, as long as you take these precautions it works well. I used a hydraulic motorcycle lift to hold my door up when i did mine, it made aligning the door to put the pins back in real easy.

I just did this job on both doors. It is pretty straight forward but a few tips and hints.

Remove the door panels and support the door on a small floor jack with wood blocks. Not on the fiberglass...but on the metal in front of the weatherstrippinig.

Remove all eight hinge bolts in the door. You have to remove the small cover to reach the top ones.

Slide the door back until the hinges are just inside the door. About 4 inches.

Use a dremel moto tool and cut off discs to remove the heads on the hinges.

Drive out the bottom hinge from the top with a long piece of 1/4 inch steel dowel. After it clears the top part of hinge you can use your dremel to grind the splines down on the top of the pin where you cut off the head. This will make it easier to drive the pin through the bottom part of the hinge. Or you can just pound it through.

At this point you are using the top hinge to balance the door in place.

Remove the hinge in the door and replace the bushings, then the hinge and set the pin from the top. Remember, you have to really whack on the top of the pin to set the splines into the top part of the hinge. You MUST drive the spines in to keep the pin from coming loose.

After the bottom is back together, you can use the couple inches in the door for balance as you drive out the top hinge the same way.

Be careful driving out the top so that the steel dowel doesn't rub on the fender. The bottom half of the hinge can be drive out from the side. Replace bushings.

Grind a "D" into the top of the new hinge pin. Carefully use your dowel and work the pin into the hinge. Once it is in place, I use a 1/2 inch, 6 inch long bolt to seat the splines.

Push the door back in and put in all eight bolts. Use the jack to ease the outside of door all the way up, and tighten the bolts.

Try the door carefully for fit. It should be good. If not, loosen bolts and set the door.
