I'm having problems removing the two front body mounts, #1&8. I've used lots of pb blaster over several days but it won't seem to turn. Part of the problem maybe that there is por15 on the exposed thread and when I start to turn the bolt, it seems as though it's going to snap in half. Would that be a problem, since I would have to replace the nut and bolt anyway? In other words, would I still be able to get the bolt out if it broke, I don't see why not as it seems to be a simple nut and bolt, mind you I don't know grade of bolt it is.
I just redid my bushings and snapped the number one nut off. I had to go through the engine compartment with a long extension to get the bolt out. Took it to a place called fasteners and he told me it was a grade 5. Charge me about $1.50 each.
I just redid all of mine, #'s 2 & 3 came out fine, One of the # 8's snapped off, the other #8 had a loose cage nut so I had to gring it off. Same with one of the #1's, a lot of grinding. The snapped one was loose and I just pulled it out with my hand. Put Never Sieze on all of them so when my SON does this agin in 20 or 30 years, he won't have such a hard time.
Thanks for the reply havesometo & kanvasman"kanvasman:
I don't see a cage nut per say, just a nut and bolt, so I'm going to try to cut off the nut with a air chisel tomorrow. Then hopefully I cut but the bolt out from the top.
Are you talking about the two bolts that are in front of the firewall on each side? I have always referred to those as 1 and 5. You can just snap or cut those and replace them.
You could be right my 76 ray, I will no refer to them as 1 & 5. I'll try to cut both out today. Thanks for the reply ray.
Since I have an impact gun, I'll sharpen one of the tips and try from the bottom first, if all else fails then I'll have no choice but to use a die grinder. Thanks for the advice finallygotit.
There was a study by some machinist group on the best penetrant to use.
50/50 acetone/automatic transmission fluid came out on top over PB blaster and the rest.
I have tried the acetone/automatic mixture and it works well. Certainly is cheaper than the PB blaster as you mix it yourself and use a chip brush to paint it on.
I would suggest plenty of fresh air as acetone is not to good for you to breathe.
removing the body on my 79 and its pretty rusty. In the chicago area you learn to use heat to get rusted bolts out, only thing that will work. If you don't have a torch use the yellow can of map gas. Heat the nut and it will expand, try to keep as much heat off the bolt as possible.
