I am restoring my 73 small block and now have the new frame almost ready. My car and new frame are both 4speed with a welded transmission cross member. I am converting to a T5.
My question is: Can you remove a T5 with the body on and engine in place with a welded cross member or do you need to convert to a bolt in cross member?
I know it would be desirable to have the cross member removable, but I would rather not change it unless it is necessary.
Ok, I'll put a bolt in cross member in. I have one, but I was hoping not to have to do it.
I have already removed the bolt in parts from the spare frame. I now need to cut the cross member out of my 4speed frame and change it over. I'll get busy and quit trying to short cut the obvious.
It looks like the holes in the frame where the bolts attach are just drilled and threaded, does that seem correct?
Dont know for sure but I would think there may be welded nuts in there for the crossmember to bolt to. If you can get the car to a welder, removing the center section of your crossmember and having a welder just weld 4 plates to the cut ends make it ez to bolt back togther. You will love the t5. Great little trans.
