1980 - plastic connector on A/C compressor - Diode???
The plastic connector broke. Went to the parts store and found one that has s diode in it. I don't know if the old one has one or not.
Does a 1980 need the diode?
If so, why?
Will it hurt the A/C compressor if I use the connector with the diode?
Thanks.

There's a diode on the wipermotor connector, not on the AC pump I think. At least I never saw it... are you sure?

I'm not sure what year they started putting the diode there. I don't have one on my '78, but ksems has it in his '81.
See this thread:

I think it is there so that when the compressor kicks on it doesn't feedback into the system (I think).

I checked *removed the AC stuff) my compressor has the diode too :)
Never noticed that before, then again I don't care for airconditioning. ;)

Thanks for the info guys! I hope someone with an 80 can check and let me know if the connector has the diode.
Marc78: Thanks, I read that post and it does not contain the answer, it was more about the compressor connector. That's the post that got me wondering about the diode.

I have no use for it.. when it's cold & rainy here it's useless and when it's warm (3 days a year) I drive with the tops off..and worst of all.. it costs power (& clutters the engine compartment... have no space for AC)

Re: 1980 - plastic connector on A/C compressor - Diode??? (kgraumann)
kgraumann:
I mean the small black plastic connector on the top of the A/C compressor that has a black and a green wire coming out of it. This plastic connector may or may not have a small diode between the wires. Mine does not and I want to know if this is correct and if it will hurt anything if I install a connector with a diode. Thanks for checking.

Thanks for checking kgraumann!!!
GM must have started using the diode on the 1981s. It probably has something to do with the ECM (computer)????.
My question now is, will it hurt anything if I install a connector with the diode? My guess is that it won't but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Yeah, probably the diaode has to do w/ the AC on signal sent to the ECM to up the idle RPM :)

If you are talking about the two wires that connect to the compressor (in one connector), I don't see any diode.
Hope that helps.
