I have just installed this mini-starter and I am a little unsure if it is correct. Below is a picture of the mounting configeration and you will notice that the selonoid is facing downward. I could not position it any other way with the aluminum block provided. Has anyone else installed one of these mini-starters that would be willing to help me out here?

As long as you shim it to get the proper starter drive gear to ring gear clearance and you get full engagement, it should be fine. The orientation of the starter (solenoid down), should make no difference in operation.
The block on the front of the starter has two sets of vertical holes. For 153 or 168 tooth flywheels.
The front block also has multi horizontal holes which rotates the top Solenoid for block clearance
This is back when I had a 700R4
I have the block on the front of the starter in the correct verical holes (the other holes will not fit...the starter drive gear will hit the flywheel if used. Also, the block does not have as many adjusting holes as the one you have pictured, so rotation is limited. I tried flipping the block over to see if it would work and it will not. When the starter gear engages (using a screw driver) it is 60% across the flywheel and depth into flywheel appears OK (it is not bottoming out). The whole purpose of installing this starter was to correct the starter heat/no start issue, but the selonoid is close (2" from pipe), so I am confident this will not matter. I did have to re-route my neg battery cable though. I do have a question on the small red wire that was attached to the original starter with a screw. Do I cut this wire, press a the female part of the blade connection (supplied in the kit) and attach to blade on starter? What is a good test for adequate operation before buttoning up?
I installed a similar starter this week. The only problem (and it is big) is that the new battery runs down if you crank it a little although it will crank again if you wait a few minutes. I told the mechanic that someone on the forum suggested a bigger cable from the the battery to the solenoid. He said it had a 10 ga. wire and that was big enough. They installed some Ford part (a remote solenoid starter) that was supposed to alleviate the problem (a Ford part the shame of it). That did not work. So now we are going to test the battery and starter tomorrow (both just a month old).
I think you need to "clock" the starter motor. That is, remove the mounting block from the starter motor and reinstall it at a different position. This will allow the solenoid to be placed back in the original position once reinstalled. Google "Clocking a starter motor" and you should have an idea of what I mean.
I wonder if you have the wrong starter. It is for a more modern gen III motor.
