This topic may have been brought up before but I'm not sure. Has any one ever disconnected their speedo cable from the speedometer without taking the dash out... and reconnected it...??? Every now and the the speedo makes a loud racket. I'm assuming the cable is bad. A new cable has been sitting in my garage for months but I won't pull the dash to install it.
Yes, I have. It's somewhat difficult on a 71 w/o air. I think on 76 it may be very difficult. Especially if you need to shove a cable through. I'm not sure if it's possible but can you replace the cable from the other end? At the tranny. Just can't remember if there was a thick portion near the speedo that would prevent you from pulling it out from the tranny side. Look at the new one I guess - that should show if it has to be out in from the top.
I had to replace the speedo cable in my '75 awhile back and it wasn't too bad...assuming you can lay on your back hanging out the door. :smash:
I'd sure like to know who designed these darn dashboards...anyway I had to remove some of the A/C ductwork but you can reach up in there to get to the back of the speedo. There is a retainer clip on the back of the speedo. When you depress the clip the cable assembly will come right out. I pulled the rubber grommet out of the firewall and pulled it right on out from the engine compartment and unscrewed it from the tranny. It goes back in pretty much the opposite. Thread the cable through the firewall and push it back into the back of the speedo and the retainer will "click" and it's locked in. Screw it back into the tranny and that's about it. The hardest part was laying under the dash in that really cramped space.
YES, a new speedo cable can be installed without messin' with the dash. What a PITA :smash:
If anyone wants to do this themselves, here's the recipe:
Time: about 3-4 hours; 2 bandaids; 2 beers; 14 year old son, three flash lights or shop lights, preferably ones that work; safety glasses and a bottle of eye wash (better get 2 bottles) within reach; a sammich (turkey & cheese); 5-6 cups of ice water (only required if you live in Western Pa where the temperature is 90 and the humidity is 90); straight screw driver(get 2 because the 14 year old son will accidentally kick your favorite screwdriver somewhere out of reach); rachet and sockets and pliers. Don't forget to take the driver's seat out AND the A/C-heat duct...
Man, I'm glad I have an early C-3. I reached up under the dash (without looking), unscrewed the cable from the back of the speedo, pulled it through a rubber sleeve in the firewall, and the rest is easy, around the back of the engine and down to the tranny. Took me all of 30 minutes to do. A/C ducting? What's that? Probably helps that my car has NO amenities. No telescoping steering wheel, no A/C, no power anything (less electrical wiring under the dash).
