I just started hearing and feeling a bang/clunk when I push the clutch in. It happens after just a couple inches of pedal travel. Car drives fine.
I looked underneath and found the Z-bar pivot stud on the engine side was loose and the linkage had some slop as a result. Tightened that up, but the noise is still there. Had my dad push the clutch while I was underneath and the noise is definitely coming from inside the bell housing. The clutch fork has a lot of up and down movement, looser than I would expect.
Any ideas on what to look for? I am hoping something just came loose because of the Z-bar being loose and I can fix this without dropping the tranny.
The retainer clip on the clutch fork has been known to break off. Then the fork doesn't pivot on the ball any particular way. You can repair it with a spring and rivet kit, or just replace the whole fork.
The clue is the large amount of vertical slop of the fork.
