Have only had my car a month. Although it is running alot better than when I first got it, it stil seems to have a "dead spot" at times when i promote rapid acceleration. My first thought was that there was some laquer build-up from sitting so long........... the previous owners only drove it a couple of times a year!, (which am not complaining about that since they had it 17 years). I replaced the fuel filter, I have ran two bottles of carbaraetor cleaner through it and am using 92 octane gas. Am thinking now that I may need to rebuild the carb???????????? what do ya think?

Hard to tell from your description, but it sounds like what I am experiencing also. Under hard acceleration I get thru first gear ok, but then at the top of second gear, somewhere over 5000 rpm it feels like I hit a rev limiter..... engine almost shuts off, then it kicks in again.... makes for some jumpy driving. I have changed pump to carb fuel line and all fuel filters. Next step will be to adjust float level in carb. (Carb is new, so rebuild not indicated). MJ
mine used to poop out a little and stutter when i slammed on it. or um "promoted rapid acceleration" i like that. so we re routed the vaccum lines and advanced the timing of the spark a little and boo-yah grandma! runnin like a champ.
Re: Cuts out a bit when I "get on it" ('79ProwlerOrange)
It seems to be more at the beginning, has done it in both first and second gears. It has........... hard to explain......... almost like a hestitation... as if I had taken my foot off of the gas, but I'm not.
I just axed my mechanic about that type of thing. He was thinking EGR. As for the hesitation at high rpm at top of 1st gear...fuel filter? Accelerator pump is an easy change and cheaper that digging into the carb. Please let the forum know...
Hi there, this is my very first posting on the Forum. Been lurkin' for a while now but just got my first 'vette so here goes...

I've got exactly the same problem you have described here. I'd be interested to know if changing the fuel line and filters worked?
Re: Cuts out a bit when I "get on it" (UK Phil '78)
I would start wit hthe filter. Then check out the carb. Could be as simple as a acc. pump or could be internal in the carb. From there make sure any rubber fuel line is not collapsed or in bad shape. Sometimes the inner fuel line is ritted and you can't see it. Then go to the fuel pump and last check the sock in the fuel tank to see if it is clogged. It looks like a small sock or filter in the tank. Sounds more like some carb tuning to me.
How do the plugs and wires look. I had my car start cutting out due to carbon build up and a big gap on the plugs. I installed some new plugs gapped at .35 and then ran some Seafoam through the motor on my blazer. This solved the problem and really helped out the motor. I need to do this on my zz4 now cause my carb was running too rich and I need to clean it out.
Mine did the same thing. I bought a $20 rebuilt kit, a few hours worth of work disassembling the carb and the loss of several thousand brain cells from inhaling toxic carb cleaner.. but now...zooooomm.. no stuttering anymore.
Re: Cuts out a bit when I "get on it" (Monkeywrench)
I think I am goin to go back to the basics on this one before I rebuild my carb. The previous owner told me that it "hadn't been that long since it was tuned up" But, since I didn't do it myself, I think i will replace the plugs, wires, rotor and distributor cap and see what happens. Then if I still need to, I will rebuild the carb. Does anyone reccomend in line fuel filters instead of the one that goes into the carb? I was thinking about taking that one out and trying an inline.
Thanx for all the posts on this......... Can't wait till she runs exactly how I want it....... not that she runs real bad now...but you know what I mean.
My BB was losing fuel pressure at wide open throttle above 4000rpm. Had similar symptoms to yours. I replaced my aftermarket "cheapie" fuel pump with a Carter rebuildable. Fuel pressure is now good to redline at WOT and problem is gone. Of course, in your case, at 5000rpm there could be a lot of other factors.
Perhaps you can measure your fuel pressure. I taped a fuel pressure gauge to the OUTSIDE of the windscreen , and connected it to a temporary T before the carb. This lets you monitor the pressure while you're driving without risking fuel spraying into the cabin if something goes wrong.

Does your tach do wierd things when that happens? If so, try plugging your vaccum advance line. If that fixes the problem then your magnetic pick-up coil has a short in it.
Took me 2 years to find that problem. What a PITA! 45 minutes to fix.
