My Frame and drive train is just about finished and just about ready for the body to go back on. Soon I will be working on cleaning and painting the underside of the body before I place it back on the frame. I need so advice on whats best to do on the underside of the car. I tried a few different paint stripers and paint thinners on a small area of the under coating and nothing seems to be working well. I am also not going to be painting to outer part of the body at this time so I am worried about using any chemicals that may get on the cars paint. Any good way to get the undercoating off? I was also wondering if it was clean if a epoxy primer would adhere to the undercoating and just paint over it.
I painted the birdcage with POR15 including the rocker channels and metal floorboard underneath. The rest of the under body I just painted with satin black.
Some guys coat the under body with Lizard Skin, then paint over it.
Do you think I can paint over the factory undercoating?
I looked at the lizerdskin and it looks like a good product, but…..I spent all my money on the frame, suspension and engine. Time to get the car back together.

I had some undercoating in the wheelwells, which I just painted over.
Why not leave the factory applied undercoating in place?
I think I am ok with leaving it, but worry about how well the paint will adhere to the undercoating. I have read some where that it undercoating needs to be in the wheel wells or there is a possibility of rocks causing cracks in the fiberglass.
My neighbor and I just did the frame for a 53 Chevy= we painted the frame with Herculiner- that roll on bedliner paint. It's rough looking, (on that frame it really looks pretty good) and is tough. We used about 1/2 gallon for the frame and we really splashed it on. And it sticks like glue. I tried to chip it with a hammer. It'd take something more than that. Might be a low cost option for the bottom of the body.
So I tried a few things to strip the undercoating of the bottom of the car but nothing worked well. So I decided to just clean up all the grease and paint over the undercoating. I sprayed Gunk engine degreaser and let it set for about 15 minuets. When I came back to start scrubbing the grease, the undercoating in some places was starting to fall off. Other places would just about wipe off and what did not wipe off scraped off like butter. I only had two cans so I need to get more but this is going to be easy to finish!
