Default How do you keep crank from turning when...

I am going to swap cams on my 72 L48 and have read that I must position it at TDC on the compression stroke and in some books I have read exhaust stroke, I guess the object is to have the dots on the gears together. Once at TDC it should not be moved during installation. That being said I know that when I go to remove the damper bolt the crank is going to want to turn. What is the trick here?

If the crank does turn its not going to be much. Once the car is all back together you can realign the balance mark with the timing tab on the timing chain cover. The only reason you don't want movemment is to allow easy reinstallation of the distrbutor.

The TRICK is to leave all the belts on the accessory drives and then get the crank roughly in position of TDC (compression or exhaust...makes no difference) and remove the balancer bolt with an air impact. If you don't have one of these, then just put a breaker bar on the nut and smack it with a hammer. Once the bolt is loose, then you can precisely position the balancer relative to TDC by grabbing the belts and pushing or pulling them to get that fine adjustment. The engine will turn fairly easy. It's really not that big of a deal. You'll probably have to re-do this by grabbing the balancer with your hands to put it back into position as you will likely experience some rotation as you use the balancer puller to remove the balancer. The trick here is that you'll still have some woodruf key engagement one the balancer lets go that will allow you to re-align the balancer with the TDC mark. Even if it moves a tad, that's still fine as long as you match the cam/crank timing marks.

Great, thanks for the reply, yes I do have an air impact wrench and what you say sounds like it work great. It never occurrred to me to leave the belts on until I get the damper bolt lose.

Thanks
