Steering Coupler
I recently took my steering coupler-ragjoint off and was wondering how to evaluate it. The rag part is fairly flat,intact with no tears...is it ok to beadblast the metal parts, inspect and reassemble? Does anyone know why there is a copper part on this essembly? I used a rubber replacement part on my 73 and it seemed to function pretty well...any input?

The rubber may not have tears, but it may be worn. I checked mine while still bolted in the car. Unlock the steering column and grab the flange on the steering box where the coupler bolts to. Rotate the flange back and forth quickly. I could feel and even see play in my coupler. That's how I checked mine. You could also hold the flange and have someone rock the steering wheel back and forth. If there is play, you should feel it.
