I took my steering column apart and replace the signal switch since my right turn signal did not work. While putting everything back together, I attached the lock plate remover tool and start applying pressure and the whole column part just came out. Does anyone have a good source so I can figure out how to put it back in and get it to stay? (I have very little knowledge of mechanics so I was surprised I made it this far) Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.
This picture should help you to assemble the parts correctly.
I assume that you have the tool to compress the toothed locking plate so that you can install the c-clip. You need to obtain a 5/16-18 set screw or a #20 Allen screw. Install it in the end of the upper steering shaft temporarily in place of the original star screw. Tighten the screw so that the upper steering shaft will not telescope. You will find that the locking plate compressor tool works correctly.
The issue I am having is when I apply pressure, it pulls the rod completely out of the middle now that I am trying to put it back together. At the end of the rod seems to be this piece flat on 1 side and rounded on the other that fits into the rod to lock it in place. I was unable to get it to go back 1 way so when I switched it around, now it just comes out again.
Issue is now resolved. There appeared to be a small rod that I was not pushing hard enough to keep it engaged and that fixed the issue. Thank you all for your time and help.
