Default Overheating

Finally got the car on the road for an extended trip. About 90 degrees out, running down the road at 45-60 with the A/C on. The temp normally runs about 160 in town no A/C. It kept climbing at about 220 I shut the A/C off and the temp slowly came back down. This wasn't stop and go. Anyway to improve to airflow/cooling? Peering in the radiator it looks clean on the inside. Outside is clean and fins are straight.

Air Dam in place and in shape? Radiator to support seals in place? Radiator to hood seals in place? Fan Shroud in place? Fan clutch working correctly? Ignition timing, what is it set at?

custom front end, no air dam. The rest of the seals are good, fan clutch works. I think I am missing the lower part of the fan shroud. Timing is set to spec, don't remember off the top of my head what it is.

Did it again yesterday. I don't think the car is overheating, I opened the hood and felt the hoses and they were not as hot as the gauge was indicating. Will get a thermo gun tomorrow to help troubleshooting. I think it may be caused by the location of the heat sensor..PO put it in the thermostat housing because it was too big to go in the port on the head. Also going to run some radiator cleaner through it. Anybody got a favorite brand?
